Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office
Attn: Major Rick Pace
3500 N. Harlan Ave

As vacancies occur, the Sheriff and his Executive Team (the chief deputy and majors) will select a group of applicants for interview. Applications remain valid for two years from the date of submission. Please do not contact us for an update on the status of your application. If an applicant is not selected for an interview within two years, the application expires and a new application must be submitted. If selected for an interview, you will be contacted by our office.
Upon completion of the interview you may be given a conditional job offer from the Sheriff. The following shall then occur:
- To ensure only the most qualified individuals are hired the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) contracts with EMPCO to provide a pre-employment, written examination for prospective confinement offices. The EMPCO examination is a Reading & Writing exam set by the Indiana Sheriff’s Association. Please note there will be a fee associated with taking the exam, and the candidate is responsible for paying this fee, which is non-refundable if the candidate does not pass the exam.
- If the candidate successfully passes the EMPCO exam, the VCSO will then initiate a background investigation.
- As part of the background process, the candidate will have to take a drug screen, physical examination, psychological evaluation and a CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analysis), which is a lie-detector examination.
Candidates who pass all phases of the conditional job offer will be scheduled for a pre-employment meeting in which you will be informed of a hire date.
