How to Apply for a Handgun Permit

    Complete a handgun permit application

  • If you live in the county you can pick up an application from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Command Post on 5607 US Hwy 41 North or from the Sheriff's Office at the Civic Center 1 NW Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd

  • If you live inside the corporate city limits you must apply from the Evansville City Police. The application can be picked up from the Evansville Police Records Room also located at the Civic Center.

The application process

  • There are two pages to the application. Please complete both forms and return them to the Sheriff’s Office.

  • If you have previously obtained a gun permit, you must fill out both forms again. The same process occurs if it is a new application or renewal or re-submitting, regardless of how many times you have had your license.

  • After the form is complete return it to the Sheriff's Office.

  • It will then take approximately two (2) weeks for the application to be reviewed. At this time a background check will be made and then it will be signed.

  • You will then be contacted by a member of the Sheriff's Office. An appointment will be made for fingerprints to be taken.

  • At the time your fingerprints are taken, you will need to bring with you a $10.00 check (can be personal) made payable to ”VCSO” and a $15.00 cashier’s check or money order made payable to “State of Indiana”.  You will also need to bring your driver’s license.

  • You will need to have fingerprints made at the Command Post location. Fingerprints are not taken downtown.

  •  Once the fingerprinting is complete, you will be given instructions on mailing your application to the State of Indiana. You should then hear something back from the State in (6) six to (8) weeks.

  • You will receive your permit directly from the State. It is recommended that you have it laminated as it is good for four (4) years and a replacement from the State will cost you $5.00.

You may be declined a handgun permit for any of the following reasons:

  • If you have ever committed a Felony.

  • If your record shows a propensity for violence.

  • If you have a history of domestic violence.

  • If you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.

  • If you have threatened law enforcement officers with violence.

The State also reserves the right to revoke any license that has been issued if you are convicted of any felony or if any of the above apply after your license has been issued.
