Text Box: Deputy Sheriff Application Process

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams announced that application packets for deputy sheriff would be available to qualified applicants April 7 through April 25, 2008. 

Every two years the sheriff’s office conducts an applicant testing process, which is used to establish an eligibility pool for future vacancies. Currently the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has an authorized strength of 107 deputy sheriffs.

Persons who wish to apply may obtain application packets from the sheriff’s headquarters located in the Administration and Confinement Center at 3500 N. Harlan Avenue any day of the week between 8 A.M. and 8 P.M. All applications are due back to the sheriff’s headquarters no later than May 2, 2008.

Requirements and Disqualifiers include:
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must possess the skills, knowledge and abilities required of all Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s deputies, which includes but is not limited to: a positive attitude, ability to communicate with the public, respect for the law, respect for your fellow citizens and respect for your fellow employees.
Be at least 21 years of age on or before November 1, 2008
High school diploma or G.E.D.
At least 60 college hours, OR at least two (2) years of full time work or military experience.
No convictions* for hate crimes.
No convictions* for domestic violence.
No felony convictions.
No dishonorable discharges from any branch of military service.
No visible tattoos while in the required uniforms of the sheriff’s office.
No more than five (5) traffic violations in the past five (5) years (does not include parking tickets).
No illegal/unlawful use of drugs within the past two (2) years.
Permanently disqualified from employment if ever engaged in the sale, dealing, manufacture of controlled substances.
May not have a conviction* for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the past two (2) years and no more than one (1) conviction* in a lifetime.
Must provide proof of registration for selective service (applicable under federal law to males under the age of 26).
Pass a post-offer of employment medical examination and psychological evaluation.
Pass a post-offer of employment background investigation.
Attend and successfully complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board’s basic law enforcement course and all of the sheriff’s office training and retention requirements within the first year of employment.
Ability to pass written, physical agility and oral evaluations
Ability to obtain an Indiana driver’s license

NOTE:  Where indicated with an (*), the term “conviction” shall include the amendment of a criminal charge (driving under the influence-DUI, etc) to some of other offense as a result of the completion of any type of deferral program.
