SUBJECT: Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Crash on I-69
CONTACT: Lt. Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred this morning on I-69.

On Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 3:30AM, the Sheriff's Office responded to area I-69 near S. Green River Road after a 911 caller reported that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. On scene investigation and statements taken from witnesses indicated that a silver Dodge Ram 3500 pick-up truck had been traveling east on I-69 before striking a pedestrian. The driver of the vehicle reported that prior to the impact he changed lanes from right to left after observing two people standing near a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder of the road. The driver reported that he did not perceive anyone in his path until a moment before the collision.

The pedestrian had been an occupant of the vehicle parked on the shoulder and had attempted to cross both eastbound lanes of I-69 toward the median. The passenger had reportedly been arguing with the occupants of the vehicle. Alcohol has been confirmed to have been a factor in the pedestrian's actions. The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital, but later died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash.

Pursuant to state law regarding crashes involving serious bodily injury or death, the driver of the pick-up truck consented to a post-crash blood draw. The incident remains under investigation.
